What is a Leap of Faith?

By rrrjagz

Do you know what a leap of faith is? Maybe you know it because you’ve seen it in the game “Assassin’s creed” or you’ve watched the film “Leap of Faith” that is directed by Richard Pearce. But if not, this is the perfect article for you to know what the meaning of it. There is a deep meaning of leap of faith that we should know. It can help us choose whether to take a risk or not.

Leap of faith is the act that every successful people choose before they succeed in their goals. It is the act of trusting and believing on your strong decision, which might change the path of your life, even though there is no definite indication of future success. It could be risky and dangerous that can either make your life miserable if you fail, or can show the possibility of success that may put you where you wanted to be if you succeed.

Leaf of Faith Situation

Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to choose between a risky decision and a safer one? This risky decision might put you on a great result or milestone, and make you achieve your goals. However, choosing this decision requires you your full faith and pure act of believing. While the safer decision might let you find your comfort zone. And let you stay in a certain situation in your life. Take a while and think of it.

Leap of Faith

Because we are afraid of failure and criticism, most of us tend to choose the safer decisions in life. But if we manage to overcome the criticism of other people towards us, and learn to make our failures as inspiration, there is a big chance for us to be successful after taking the leap!

We can also relate this leap of faith in love and passion. By risking your heart not to be broken by the person you trust and love the most. And also, by risking your career and follow your true passion.

Little Leap

There are always risks that we can encounter and can consider in our everyday life. It will only depend on how the person can relate it to a leap of faith. For me we can call this risk a “Little Leap”.

These are the examples of what I call Little Leap:

  • The risk of leaving your car at the parking space along the road, hoping that it won’t be scratched by a passer-by or hit by other cars.
  • The risk of leaving your bike locked on a bike parking rack, believing that it won’t lose some parts
  • The risk of leaving your house or apartment wondering if you’ve unplugged all the appliances that you’ve used.

Greatest Leap

In addition, there are leaps of faith that are riskier. These are the leaps that can tear your goals down if you’ve not succeeded. However, it can make you rich if you will consider and convert it into an opportunity. This is the leap of faith that I call the “Greatest Leap”. With the help of your persistence and strong effort, you can surely achieve it.

This is the example of what I call Greatest Leap:

  • You are a graduate of a specific course and you’ve mastered it. So you have a decent job and your salary is enough to save you a lot of money, but suddenly you felt that this job is not making you happy and not driving you towards your goal. You wanted to quit your job, choosing to lose what you have earned on the company: reputation, position, and respect from other employees. You wanted to do this because you desire to pursue your greatest goal in life.

If you have decided to quit your job and choose a new career where you can pursue your goal, a lot of problems might flow into your life because that decision would not be easy. It is like setting your career on the starting position where you have to learn new skills and knowledge and then master it again.

At this moment, especially if it is your first encounter with failure, you will hear a lot of criticism from those people that do not understand the reason on why you have decided to quit your job. But somehow, there will always be a person that will support you with all the decisions that you make. So instead of listening to the criticism of others, learn to appreciate the concerns of the people that trust you without letting criticism stop you.

Before taking the Leap

You must know first the factors to be considered before making the leap. These are some of the factors that can help you analyze:

1. Know the reason why you want to take it.

Seek for the answers on what pushes you to take the leap. By knowing the reason why you want to take it, you can now analyze what motivates you for this reason. Is it because of love or fear?

It’s not unusual for humans to base almost every decision on fear: fear of rejection, fear of poverty, fear of looking dumb, and so on. Fear-based decisions lead to hollow victories at best and endless regret at worst. Only love-based decisions create lasting happiness.

Because leap of faith is frightening even when the choice to make them is based on love. You can gain more clarity by getting into the habit of imagining the choices you’d make if you had no fear—of failing, of losing, of being alone, of disapproval. Going to a fearless place in your imagination will show you clearly which decisions still have the fire and energy, on which it will push you to deal with all the problems that you might face in the future

Love-based choices have one more quality, they are enduring. And in this way, they make us behave like heroes that carries our own decisions. [1]

2. Evaluate your decision.

Evaluate what will happen if you decide to take the leap or not. Comparing these two future possibilities can help you realize and imagine three different pictures: your life if you succeed, your life if you fail, and your life if you don’t take the leap. Looking back at your decision, which of these pictures make you feel proud of yourself? And if this decision supports your goals, you may chase after it.[2]

3. Having an unshakable plan.

Having a definite plan after choosing to take the leap is a must. If you chose to take the leap, you must have a definite plan for every possibility that may happen in your way. You must have two plans – a plan if ever you fail, and a plan if ever you succeed.

Sometimes your plan will be on the right direction, and other times it will be the wrong one. If it’s the right one, keep going. And if it’s the wrong one, learn to pick yourself up, go back to your safe place, recover, and take another leap again. [3]

4. Criticism and Failure ready.

You must be immune to every criticism that you might hear from others. If you let their criticism give a meaning into your thought nothing will happen in your goals, you are just putting yourself in a dark place in your mind. But if you have the attitude of creating goals out of all the criticism of people, it is good for you, and it can push you to succeed in whatever other people say about you.

Fail isn’t enough to simply accept failure as an option. Until you actually experience failure, you won’t learn to confront it and you won’t be able to harden yourself against it.[4] When failures come to you, you must remember that these are the parts of the free fall where you need to believe that this failure will harden you if you fail again and it well help you to understand that failure is a part of success, not the opposite of it. It is where we also learn to inspire yourself to stand up even if you fail again and again.
